The 25-25-50 Rule

The great Czech player, Ivan Lendl said he would first have players play against players they could beat so they could find out how and why they win. Then he would make them play against better players so they could discover how and why they lose. Finally, he would have them play against players of the same level so that they could put into practice what was learned and learn to play under pressure.

  • 25% of your opponents should be at a slightly lower level than you in an effort to boost your confidence as well as practice some new shots / strategies in a lower pressure situation.

  • 25% of your opponents should be at clearly higher level than you in order to expose your weaknesses and force you to play better just to compete.

  • 50% of your opponents should be on the same level as you. If you play well you win, if you play poorly you lose. This is what the game is all about!
