Academy Director Ashley Hobson

Academy Director

Ashley Hobson. Twenty-five years of coaching and playing experience includes coaching at the Van Der Meer Academy, with the Peter Burwash International organization, on the ATP, WTA, and ITF International Junior tours in over 60 countries. Coached two top twenty WTA players and as a National coach, coaching and captaining teams competing in Davis Cup, Federation Cup, World Youth Cup, World Junior Tennis, Asian Games, and the All China Games. College educated as a lawyer completing BA and LLB degrees. Associations include PTR, NSCA and completed the USTA High Performance Coaching Program.

Head coach Chris Palmer

Head Coach

Chris Palmer. A native of Newburgh, New York, Chris went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR. He competed on the varsity tennis team during his four years there. As a teaching professional, Chris has over fifteen years' experience working with juniors and professional women players. Chris has coached at the Orange Bowl and many other international tournaments. He has directed programs in Seoul, Korea and was the head professional at Carmel Valley Ranch in Carmel, CA for the Peter Burwash International organization.


Mental Toughness Consultant Bryce Young

Mental Toughness Consultant

Dr. Bryce Young. Dr. Young has been successful as a teacher, coach and author. Featured as a clinician internationally, he has conducted Peak Performance Training Seminars for athletes and coaches in all sports. At Bethany College in Kansas, Dr. Young’s teams earned ten conference championships in ten years. In fourteen years of college coaching, Dr. Young’s student athletes achieved a 100% graduation rate including seven Academic All Americans and ten Playing All Americans. Young was five times voted Kansas Coach of the Year. He served as President of the NAIA National Tennis Coaches Association and as a member of the NCAA Intercollegiate Tennis Association Board of Directors.

Head Trainer

Steve Riley. President and CEO, Performance & Fitness Solutions, Inc. B.S. Sport and Fitness Management, Troy State University. Former Fitness Director and Personal Trainer, Concourse Athletic Club

Steve has 17 years in the Fitness Industry with extensive CEC’s including:

  • Advanced Concepts in Medicine and Stability Ball Training
  • Power Training
  • Low Back Strengthening and Injury Preventive Training

  • Movement Assessment & prescription for poor Core/Hip/Glute recruitment
Steve is also a consultant for Fitness Center design and Home Fitness Area design.

Academy Coaches

Linda Guentert - HPTA coach



Linda Guentert. A USPTA professional with over 25 years of coaching experience in Ohio, Michigan and Georgia. Linda was the head pro at Southern Athletic Club for 9 years. She is a Georgia Junior Competitive Training Center coach and has coached at the Southern Zonals. Captain of the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team where she received a BS in Medical Technology.

Linda is a member of the Georgia Junior Competitive Committee. Her daughter plays tennis for Michigan State University.


Greg Nelms. PTR professional with over ten years of teaching experience with junior players. Strong understanding and track record of developing younger players. Greg has a bachelors degree in Economics and an associate degree in Sport and Recreation Management.


Blaine Sumpter - HPTA coach




Blaine Sumpter. Blaine is joining HPTA in May 2010 after completing a degree in Professional Tennis Management at Ferris State University, Michigan. He also worked as assistant tennis professional at Ferris State.

Before attending Ferris State, Blaine played college tennis at Methodist University, NC.

A USPTA certified coach, he has coached at Stanford and Royal Melbourne Country Club, Chicago.
